NASA — the agency that went
Sixty-eight years, twelve people on the Moon, two robots past the edge of the solar system, and instruments on every rock big enough to land on. NASA is the one that went — the only agency whose flags actually got planted somewhere else.
The one thing no one else has done
Between July 1969 and December 1972, twelve Americans walked on the Moon. No one else has been back since.
Six landings, twenty-four astronauts to lunar distance, 842 pounds of rock and dust brought home — the entire foundation of modern lunar science was gathered in three and a half years. Apollo remains the only crewed mission to another world in the history of the species. Every plan since to do it again — Constellation, Artemis, the Chinese ILRS — is measured against a program that finished before most of the people planning them were born.
The Grand Tour
In 1977 NASA launched two spacecraft to take advantage of a planetary alignment that recurs once every 176 years.
The Voyagers were supposed to survey Jupiter and Saturn. They kept going. Voyager 2 became the only spacecraft ever to visit Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 1 kept its camera pointed home from six billion kilometres away and made the Pale Blue Dot, the most humbling photograph ever taken. Both crossed the heliopause — the edge of the Sun's influence — in the 2010s. They are still transmitting.
Each carries a gold-plated phonograph record — sounds of Earth, greetings in fifty-five languages, Chuck Berry, Bach — engineered to be playable a billion years from now. Their radioisotope power sources are slowly cooling; instruments have been powered down one by one to keep the essentials alive. Signal strength at Earth is about one-tenth of one billionth of one billionth of a watt. NASA still reads it.

The eye that never blinked
Hubble launched in 1990 with the wrong prescription. The primary mirror was ground to the wrong shape — a two-micrometer error that produced blurry images and public humiliation.
Three years later, Space Shuttle astronauts installed corrective optics in orbit — glasses for a telescope — and Hubble became the most productive scientific instrument ever built. Five servicing missions kept it alive across three and a half decades. It has taken more than 1.6 million observations, imaged galaxies from the first billion years of the universe, and turned raw data into a public art form.
Mars, one rover after another
Since 1997 NASA has landed a rover on Mars every few years — each one bigger, smarter, and further from a beacon than the last.
Sojourner was a microwave-oven-sized proof of concept. Spirit and Opportunity ran for years past their design lives — Opportunity lasted fourteen years, driving 45 kilometres across Meridiani Planum. Curiosity has been on Mount Sharp since 2012, its nuclear power source still humming. Perseverance landed in Jezero Crater in 2021 with a helicopter strapped to its belly — Ingenuity, which flew 72 times in Mars's whisper-thin atmosphere before dust ended its rotor.
The rovers stopped being news. That is the achievement.
The current fleet
Right now, on the day you're reading this, NASA has spacecraft on Mars, in orbit around the Sun, at the Moon, at Jupiter, at asteroids, beyond the heliopause — and one telescope a million miles from Earth that is quietly rewriting cosmology. None of them are the story. All of them are working.
